PROGRESSIVE YOUTH WEEKEND - DJING, LAPTOPS AND RUM AND COKES 10 October 2008
Bob Foster, one of our progressive youth panel, zips from east London to west and back again, ‘spinning’ tunes on his laptop in this picture diary of his weekend.
“This is me at my girlfriend’s house getting a playlist together for my DJ set later I’m playing in the second room of a club with a bunch of my friends. The girls who run the club are our friends and they usually ask one of us to promote the second room and choose the DJs. It’s nice to get forty quid and some free booze and try out different music, as it often doesn’t matter what you play there as most of the people just stay in the main room.”
“This is Alex - he runs a club night called Get Me, which is rare in that it is a night in west London as opposed to east, where most of our group of friends are based. He also runs a blog called maybepossiblynot.blogspot.com. He’s an art student and he’s 23.”
“The only people I really knew who weren’t DJing that night were Jackson and Max. Jackson is a photographer and 24 and Max, 23, was a drama student but now works in a bookshop. Max dresses like a country gent absolutely to the letter but knows more about 90s hip-hop.”
“This is Greg playing his dancehall set. He is 23 and has just started a medical degree but produces dancehall and dubstep as well.”
“This is the decks, the free Red Stripe and my set on three CDs. Most of the music I play out I find on blogs, download or get emailed by friends, I stopped taking vinyl out about two years ago. I played a load of bassline this evening. It’s pretty easy to mix and everyone likes it, even the indie kids at this place.”
This is Guy and Alexis DJing Italo house. This evening was a total nerd-off - everyone just talked about music and there were no girls at all. It’s embarrassing, I have to show you this!”
“This is me and my girlfriend, Storm, the next day. We’re on our way to the Old Blue Last in Shoreditch to see Chris Nieratko do a show. He’s the guy who writes the porn reviews for Vice mag that are really just his drinking stories. He’s a funny guy and he’s touring a book of these stories (Skinema) by showing slides and being funny about them.”
“This is Storm and Jose in the Old Blue Last. Jose is a freelance cameraman and 27. After Chris Nieratko told a bunch of stories I thought he was a badass, and then Jose told me about the time he spent a week living with a tramp on Venice Beach, accidentally robbing houses and playing golf with rocks until he got calluses on his hands. Now I think Jose should get a book tour.”
“I DJed before the show because I am constantly short of cash at the moment. That kept Storm in rum and cokes.”
“This is Chris Nieratko mid-anecdote. It was really very funny.”
